Motherhood Series
Within her series of paintings exploring the theme of motherhood, Le Trang scrutinises the societal constructs and power dynamics inherent in representations of motherhood. Drawing from feminist discourse, she interrogates traditional narratives surrounding maternity, challenging normative expectations and idealisations. Elucidating the complexities and contradictions embedded within cultural perceptions of motherhood, Trang transcends simplistic dichotomies, presenting motherhood as a site of both empowerment and constraint, where agency and subjugation coalesce in intricate configurations.
Home series
A significant focus of the “Home” series investigates the relationship between nature and memory, drawing inspiration from the artist’s family’s experiences during post-liberation Vietnam in 1975. The portrayal of Asian Golden Weaver birds by Trang serves to evoke memories of the past while highlighting the delicate balance within ecosystems and the intricate connections between nature, kinship, and the human-non-human realm. These birds, native to Southeast Asia, hold cultural significance in the region, symbolizing resilience, adaptability, and environmental harmony.
Still Life Series
Le Trang’s Still Life paintings exude dynamic vitality and atmospheric resonance. Through bold brushwork and deft manipulation of colour, Trang infuses her still life scenes with an ethereal quality, blurring the boundaries between representation and abstraction. Each stroke of paint becomes a meditation on the fleeting nature of perception, as objects dissolve into shimmering pools of colour and light.
Trang eschews rigid formalism in favour of capturing the fleeting moments of lived experience. Through her Still Life Series, she pays homage to the legacy of the impressionists while forging her own path forward, breathing new life into a timeless genre. In doing so, Trang reminds us of the profound beauty to be found in the simplest of things.
Hue Heritage Series
In her artistic portrayal of the architectural landscape of her hometown Hue City, Le Trang navigates the fluidity of time, juxtaposing elements of antiquity with markers of modernity. Her paintings become palimpsests of historical sedimentation, where past and present converge in a complex interplay of memory and oblivion.
Central to Trang’s inquiry is the examination of power structures and colonial legacies embedded within Hue’s built environment. By deconstructing spatial configurations, she illuminates tensions between preservation and development, tradition and progress. Through her exploration of the architectural landscape, Trang invites viewers to contemplate the intersections of space, time, and history, prompting a deeper engagement with the complexities of urban identity and memory.
